Sean Murphy, 38, a member of the bodybuilding world, recently came under a lot of fire for his actions. Murphy decided to sue Wye Valley NHS Trust for $747,930 after undergoing surgery to rectify his torn bicep tendon in March 2017. According to claims from other newspapers, during the operation, his elbow suffered nerve damage that hindered his daily life. Murphy also claimed he had to give up his job as a bodybuilder and rugby player.

However, social media posts indicating that he was bench pressing 330 pounds alerted the NHS. There was also a video on Facebook where Murphy was seen working out with a 42-pound kettlebell. The bodybuilder filmed himself exercising with the kettlebell, which backfired on him.

The social media posts and images caused the compensation and damages against the NHS to be thrown out of court. Murphy now has a $128,823 court bill over his head and can also face jail time after the judge granted permission for contempt of court proceedings.

Judge Martin Picton had said there was a “very strong” case of him lying about the nerve injury to get back money. The NHS also stated that Sean Murphy was eligible for compensation for some of the damages he claimed but that the $747,173 compensation was “grossly exaggerated” based on his ongoing symptoms.

Sean Murphy also had a lot to say and explained his situation via video call from home. He said, “I can’t dress myself, my wife dresses me every day.” Sean continued, “I am suffering severe anxiety attacks because of this case. I am not somebody who would swindle money from the NHS.”

According to the court decisions, Murphy was asked to return $64,431 that NHS had to pay before the trial started, along with bills from lawyers, which amounted to a total of more than $128,953. The NHS has also taken this a step further by appealing to the High Court and wanting Sean to serve jail time.

Judge Picton did not accept Sean’s plea and granted permission for contempt of court proceedings to go forward. The Judge further explained, “There is a strong prima facie case that Mr. Murphy has deliberately and falsely set out to exaggerate the impact of the surgery.”
