Exercise scientist and bodybuilder Dr. Mike Israetel started YouTube series critiquing celebrity training protocols. The videos became so popular that Israetel continued to make them. He has even made a video on popular fitness influencer Lean Beef Patty. In the videos, the exercise scientist scrutinizes workout routines, exercise selection, and the effectiveness of the exercises. At the end of each video, he awards the program in question a score.

However, his latest video involving the personal trainer of Hollywood icon Mark Wahlberg might have infuriated Israetel the most. In his latest YouTube video, Mike Israetel analyzed a Men’s Health video featuring Brian Nguyen, Mark Wahlberg’s trainer, for the past fifteen years. However, Dr. Israetel wasn’t impressed with the athletic performance coach’s advice.

In the video, Nguyen named an exercise he called “a bang for your buck” warm-up exercise for the posterior chain. It was a hybrid exercise involving a hip thing and a band pull apart. The Hollywood star’s trainer called it the “Hip bridge with band pull apart.” While explaining how to do the movement, Nguyen asked people to focus on breathing.

The personal trainer said those trying the movement should inhale through their nose and exhale their mouth. Optimized breathing would make the movement more effective. However, Israetel didn’t agree with the celebrity coach. “Guys breathing in with the nose and out through the mouth is nonsense,” Mike Israetel told his subscribers.

“Evolution designs you to breathe. You do it real f***ing well. Believe it or not, you even do it automatically in your sleep!” said the exercise scientist. However, the already annoyed bodybuilder became infuriated with the advice that followed. Wahlberg’s trainer said while exhaling one should let all the breath out. “Don’t let that breath get stuck here (pointing to the neck),” said Nguyen.

“Sorry, what? Don’t let your breath get stuck in your f***ing neck?” said Israetel in disbelief. “You would die if that happened,” said Israetel. He labeled it “peak nonsense,” before moving on with the rest of the video. However, he didn’t have anything good to say about the rest of it either. He also named an alternate warm-up exercise.

The exercise scientist named a more effective warm-up

Besides disagreeing with Mark Wahlberg’s trainer on what makes a good posterior chain warm-up, Mike Israetel also named an alternative. According to the exercise scientist, deadlifts are far superior for the posterior chain than Brian Nguyen’s hybrid movement. However, Israetel didn’t name one, he named additional exercises that target the posterior chain.

“Stiff-legged deadlifts, bent rows, and any other exercise that uses the fucking posterior chain,” said the bodybuilder. While Dr. Mike Israetel often disagrees with celebrity trainers and their necessary tweaks to basic exercises, he rarely becomes so infuriated. What was your reaction? Let us know in the comments.
