December is looking like a busy month for the boxing community. One fight that is part of this big hullabaloo is the Jake Paul vs. Andre August fight scheduled for the 15th of December. The fight will run at the Caribe Royale Orlando Arena for 8 rounds. For Paul, it is his third and final fight of the year. On the other hand, for August, this fight comes as an integral fight that will push him into the big leagues.
It would be a mistake to assume that August would be an easy win for Paul. While the former comes with 7 wins in his 8-fight-long career, August is no farther from matching up. With 10 fights from which 8 remain massive wins, the fighter holds the vehemence in him to give a tough fight to ‘Problem Child.’ While early predictions see him as the underdog, his past fights provide a different picture.

The beginnings of Andre August
Up until the Jake Paul fight was announced, August remained a relatively unknown name in the boxing realm. However, once the fight was made official, a frenzy ensued among enthusiasts. After having fought the likes of Tommy Fury (who gave Paul his first loss, by the way) and Nate Diaz, Paul chose to fight August. Unlike his other opponents, August is a traditional boxer who has never fought an influencer or undertaken a crossover fight before. Thus, it’s a fight against a ‘real’ boxer who brings ample experience to the table.
Andre August, Jake Paul’s upcoming opponent, was a 3-time regional Golden Gloves champion and a 2-time Texas state runner up during his amateur career before turning professional.

In his amateur days, the fighter was a 3-time regional Golden Gloves champion and a 2-time Texas state runner-up. And then came his entry into the professional ring. It was in 2013 that August made his pro-debut at the Convention Center of South Padre Island. He went against another debutante fighter, Steven Medrano for four rounds. However, the crescendo would appear prematurely in the first round itself, with August claiming victory through a technical knockout. While the bout marked August’s beginning in the sport, his opponent’s ended. After, the loss, Medrano was not officially known to have undertaken any fight.
August’s rise through the ranks
It is a valid argument that August has not gained the notoriety to deserve the big fights yet. However, his trajectory since the debut begs to differ. It is quite similar to that of any leading boxer today. After his debut, a little over a year later, the fighter entered the ring yet again. This time against the Texan fighter, Rudy Lozano. While the fight took its course entirely through the four rounds, none went home victorious that night as the judges called for a draw by majority decision. After that, the two fighters went their ways. While one (Lozano) hardly could register any wins in his 19-fights long career, August excelled.
From 2015, he had ample fights, winning all of them. From the likes of Patrick Simes (2015), Joshua Kuhn (2017), and Ramiro Garcia (2017), he made a mark in all of these 4-rounds fights. At the surface, these fights might not look that big of a deal in the sport but for August, they shaped his career. Most wins through knockout, he would personify the idea of a knockout machine. However, such a streak continued only until 2018, when the fighter was dealt his first career loss.
From a loss to a fight with Jake Paul, August rises from the ashes
In September 2018, came the fateful night when Andre August faced his first loss against the New York fighter, Eric Abraham. At the Houston fight, Andre was dropped down in the 2nd round itself through a technical knockout. However, the loss could not hold him back. Within less than a year, he entered the ring again. This time against the wrath of Missouri fighter, Jeremie Parks. In the first round of the 4-round fight, Andre scored a knockout, bouncing back from his loss against Abraham.

Post that, followed a streak of fights that the fighter won through unanimous decisions. In 2019, came a crucial moment for him, when he got a fight against Santario Martin for the Combative Sports Program Texas Light Heavy (vacant) title. With a win through another unanimous decision for his first 6-round fight, Andre had a title beside his name. A gap of two years later, he’d enter the ring again. This time against Brandon Martin, a fight that he won via UD. Now, he remains poised to fight his biggest, most lucrative, and hardest challenge ever. Jake Paul.

For most fighters that August has fought to date, their careers have either plummeted at some point or have found it hard to register noteworthy wins. On December 15th, he undertakes his first-ever 8-round long fight. August winning or losing remains a conversation for later. But for now, the fight provides him an opportunity and platform that is unlike any he’s had before, what he does with it remains to be seen.
