Canelo Alvarez Ghosts Makabu – ‘The Junior’ Promises Knockout Against the Mexican

Canelo Alvarez was teasing a potential move to the cruiserweight division a few months back, aligning himself for a scrap against WBC 200 lbs champion, Ilunga Makabu. However, the pound-for-pound king appears to have changed his plans and can remain in the lower weight categories for some more time.
Following a flawless stint at 168 lbs, Alvarez can now move in any direction. But winning a title at 200 lbs will turn him into a five-weight world champion, a big reason to press for the Makabu fight. Well, Alvarez was supposed to attend the Makabu’s WBC title defense against Thabiso Mchunu in Don King’s latest event.

While Alvarez snubbed it, Makabu successfully defended his championship status and sent a stern warning to Alvarez. He said, “You know, Canelo is a superstar. I am also a superstar.”
“I am gonna knock him out.”
Promoter Don King reinfused those statements and told the reporter, “Did you hear, what he said? He said he [Makabu] is going to knock him [Alvarez] out.”

These factors can intrigue Canelo Alvarez to move up in a weight class. However, PBC and Eddie Hearn have already offered him lucrative fights including Jermall Charlo, Gennady Golovkin, and Dmitry Bivol. These fights will have a world title on the line and can generate more PPVs for Alvarez if compared to a fight against Makabu.
Who Was Canelo Alvarez’s Last Fight in 2021?
Nevertheless, Alvarez hasn’t ruled away the chances of him facing the Congo boxer. So Makabu can continue winning and ultimately bag a fight against the Mexican superstar in the coming days. It seems the only way left for the WBC cruiserweight champion to get his hands on Alvarez.
Canelo Alvarez is dominating the fight scene
Alvarez still holds the undisputed super middleweight championship, the first boxer to boast the tag. Thus, he can also retain himself in the division and defend his belts.

Moreover, he can directly influence the other title rides by setting foot into a new weight category. When looked at from a broader perspective, Makabu isn’t the biggest name on Alvarez’s radar right now.
A trilogy against Gennady Golovkin can fetch way more money to the Mexican star than what Makabu can bring to the table. So Alvarez still has the time to craft his plans and return after deciding something stable about his combat future.
