Outrage Over Canelo Alvarez Leads to Oscar De La Hoya Getting Ripped Apart Again in Rolly Romero’s Defense

The boxers did their bit inside the ring. However, a few exchanges outside didn’t disappoint either, as they increasingly caught fans’ fancy. Among those, Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins‘ hearty laughter over Rolando Romero‘s knockout loss to Isaac Cruz seems to have gained considerable traction. But it would be naive to assume that the act would have been allowed to slide. The CEO of Mayweather Promotions, which backs ‘Rollie’, quickly picked it up. Running to his charge’s defense, Leonard Ellerbe launched a scathing attack on the Golden Boy promoters.

A few followers tried to make the matter even. They pointed to seemingly comparable conduct on Ellerbe’s end when he talked about Canelo Alvarez‘s upcoming fight with The Golden Boy’s Jaime Munguia. However, Floyd Mayweather Jr.‘s long-time confidant didn’t take it lightly. He flung back, distinguishing his actions from those of De La Hoya and Hopkins.

To De la Hoya’s post of “We just heard Rolly got stopped by a chihuahua LMAO,” Leonard Ellerbe first wrote that it was a crude display of behavior from two of the most well-known names in boxing. Thankfully, Rolando Romero was doing well. However, it would have looked bad on both the former world champions and now leading promoters if ‘Rollie’ had suffered any serious injuries. In the same vein, he appreciated ‘Pitbull’s victory as well.

“Wow, Rolly is ok, but what if he wasn’t and something tragic happened? Classless behavior from two HOF fighters and promoters, especially immediately after a fight imo. Props again to Isaac Cruz and his team on a terrific performance,” said Leonard Ellerbe.

But a follower quickly brought up a comment the Mayweather Promotions CEO made after the Canelo Alvarez-Jaime Munguia press conference. Ellerbe reportedly said that to him, the greatest satisfaction would be seeing Alvarez knock out Munguia right in front of De La Hoya.

The user said, “Leonard, you just said you wanted to see Canelo knock out Munguia in front of Oscar two weeks ago. Now Oscar is laughing at your fighter getting knocked out. It is what it is.” Ellerbe shot back that, as much as he’s into boxing promotion, for sure, he won’t indulge himself by making a video that shows him laughing at a boxer who lost the fight early. He respects competitiveness. But he certainly will not rejoice after knowing that a boxer has been inflicted with grave injuries.

Another follower charged in ‘The Golden Boy’s defense. He took Romero’s example, where the former champion talked disparagingly about Oscar De La Hoya. So in a way, the Olympic gold medalist is just paying back with the same coin.

Leonard Ellerbe once again clarified that people say a lot of things in the heat of the moment. However, it shouldn’t be the case when one of the boxers goes through a serious medical condition. “We all talk sh*t; it’s a part of the game, bro. What if we slide into a coma or something after the fight? That was the immediate reaction, but hey, it’s all good. My guy came up short; great fight for the fans,” he said.

The run-ins between the Mayweather and Golden Boy camps are not something most fans are unaware of. Whoever stands corrected shall always remain open to discussion. However, what Leonard Ellerbe brought out stands true as well. A boxer, even when knocked out, is deserving of all the respect and admiration. Mocking him for the way he lost the match might appear rude and unpolished to many.
