Post his WBC junior welterweight title bout win against Regis Prograis, Devin Haney’s father, Bill took a lot of shots at the Prograis camp. But Prograias’ response to the victor, Devin Haney was rather unexpected. Breaking the typical mold of post-match banter, Prograis’s tweet was not just gracious; it was admirable. He acknowledged Haney’s skill and victory, a rare gesture in this fiercely competitive sport.

Haney’s reply, though, was where the real surprise lay. It wasn’t just a thank-you note; it was a message resonating with unexpected warmth and respect.

Devin Haney and Prograis set a new standard for boxing

After the intense showdown for the WBC junior welterweight title, the combatants took to Twitter to extend mutual respect. Regis Prograis, despite his loss to Devin Haney, opened this unique dialogue. “Disappointed to have come up short,” Prograis tweeted, “but I want to give credit where it’s due. Congratulations to @Realdevinhaney on remaining undefeated and becoming a 2 division world champion. You’re special kid. Now, my focus is on becoming a 3x champion. I’ll be back better than ever!” His words, tinged with respect and acknowledgment, broke the usual post-fight rhetoric.

Now, given that Haney’s father, Bill had been on a rampage on social media after his son’s victory, things could have gotten rather ugly. Fortunately, Devin Haney had other ideas. Haney took the opportunity to graciously thank Prograis for the opportunity.

In the tweet, Haney said, “Thank you for the opportunity Champ! Rest up & enjoy the holidays with your fam.. well deserved 💪🏽🤞🏽”.  This exchange starkly contrasted the pre-fight tension, where Prograis had been vocal about “hurting” Haney. Yet, in the aftermath, their words painted a different picture – one of mutual admiration and respect. That said, Haney’s humility was only reserved for his fallen opponent.

As soon as Devin won his fight, he already had his sight on the next challenge.
