IBF super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant might have lost his chance to have a shot at the three-belt unified champion Canelo Alvarez. The two were scheduled to meet each other by the end of this year in a unification fight. However, as a few contractual dramas seem to have curbed the potential fight, Alvarez is looking at the other options for his in-ring return.
While a few reports have suggested that Caleb Plant’s uncanny financial demands have hampered the fight, ‘Sweethands’ doesn’t seem ready to admit that. He has expressed himself on social media, posting a picture of himself in a suit. He claimed it was his fight night suit for the unification collision, which may not happen soon.

Caleb Plant also explained himself in another post. According to him, he has never boxed for money and was not opting for an exceptional payday. While it’s clear that Canelo Alvarez could have brought a lucrative earning to Plant, ‘Sweethands’ didn’t tag it as his first priority.
Nevertheless, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has already begun searching for another opponent for Alvarez. There’s no denying that the P4P king can enter any championship ride. However, a 168 lbs unification battle would have made the most sense.

The fight is still relevant and can happen somewhere down the line. But the sheer activeness in the 168 lbs division might see a change in its titleholders. That said, Plant will have to keep on defending his title, unless Canelo Alvarez finally opts to face him.

What’s next for Caleb Plant?
Even though Alvarez was the best option, Plant’s IBF championship will bring him several more names. David Benavidez and several more boxers are there, hoping to face Alvarez. As Canelo Alvarez seems uninterested in all of them, Plant can use himself to fill the void.

21-0 as a world champion, Plant needs to strengthen his resume before challenging Alvarez. On winning potential matchups at 168 lbs, ‘Sweethands’ will clearly raise his bar to a point where Alvarez might be forced to face him. Hence, all Plant needs to do is stay active and keep winning.
