On the 9th of December, in one of the biggest fights of his career, Regis Prograis will defend his WBC Super Lightweight title against Devin Haney. On that note, on Off The Cuff, speaking to DAZN Boxing, the 34-year-old champion out of New Orleans looked back at his journey in the sport. In doing so, he recounted how the highlights of Mike Tyson inspired a 14-year-old kid to grow into a world champion in the sport.

Mike Tyson made Regis Prograis quit football and pick boxing
According to Regis Prograis, his journey with combat sports began when he first attended Karate classes as a young kid. However, with the point-fighting system of Karate, aggressive Regis was soon tired of the sport. However, he developed a particular love for punching. “Even before boxing, I did Karate when I was way younger. Karate wasn’t enough action for me. It was one point at a time and I stopped kicking. I was only punching and hurting the dudes. The sensei told my daddy, ‘He got to box’,” said Regis.
As Regis had a lot of energy and aggression, he switched to football. But, when he was a teenager, his life changed as he one day stumbled upon Mike Tyson’s highlights. “When I was 14 or something like that, I was watching some highlights. And it was this short tiny stocky a** man knocking out these giants. I pinpoint, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ It was obviously, Mike Tyson,” revealed an excited Prograis.
As per his statements, it was Mike Tyson’s head movement and punching power that fascinated a young Regis. The fact that Tyson, 5’11 KOed opponents much taller than him made Prograis want to pursue the sport. As a result, he also wished to fight in the Heavyweight division of the sport.
