On August 12, 2022, Tyson Fury retired after 14 glorious years in the ring. In parallel, he handed over the Ring title. And barely eight days later, at King Abdullah Sports City, Jeddah, Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk defeated Anthony Joshua when they met a second time. Had Fury not taken the retirement decision, the direct path to Heavyweight boxing’s long pending undisputed question would have settled after 22 years of waiting.

But Queensbury Promotions’ boss, Frank Warren, had always expressed an eagerness to see the two Heavyweight contemporaries facing off against each other. Speaking to BBC Radio 5, he mentioned that a Fury – Usyk fight would be fantastic. Ever since, talks to finalize the deal have been running the rumor mill. As it lingered, exasperation replaced the initial hype surrounding the battle. So much so that quite a few expected the fight to meet the Crawford – Spence Jr. fate. But there might be light at the end of the tunnel. At least that’s what promoter Frank Warren states. It’s a different matter that fans took the latest development with a pinch of salt.

Promoters have confirmed a fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk

Warren told iFL TV, “It’s just a matter of where and how much…and we’re all pretty positive about getting it over the line. “I said that about [Anthony] Joshua a few months ago, so I don’t want to tempt fate until it’s signed; it don’t mean nothing, as I always say. But at the moment, everybody looks like they want it to happen, especially the fighters, and it’s a great fight, a big fight…”

The fight might occur in the Middle East during the first quarter of 2023. Also, the release of an official bout agreement should happen anytime soon.

Fans want to know if it will ever ever happen

Skeptics, in general, did not react very enthusiastically to the news, despite the fact that it may please die-hard fans.

@The69Batman postulated Warren’s comments to be akin to the Big Freeze or Chill, the universe’s ultimate fate.

Sounding a bit more hopeful, @RRR04_ believes the fight’s likelihood of happening is increasing significantly. But even he may still need to get his hopes up.

The cynic in @tredollasign feels for everyone and, despite similar news on a particular “fight inching closer,” often finds them floundering mid-way.

@sylsau, sounding very optimistic, mentioned that even if there were a little wait, it would be an excellent Christmas present for everyone, with the victor getting a chance to face Joe Joyce.

@rajagopal2001 and RRR04_ fear the fight going the way Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr.’s contest went.

Another hopeful among the bunch, @IamJarJarB1nks, went a step ahead and wanted to know the spot in boxing history Usyk would occupy if he prevailed over Fury.

Usyk’s representative, Alex Krassyuk, informed Sky Sports of the final formality of making and signing the contracts. Both sides agreed upon the terms of the fight verbally. A live broadcast of the match to the entire world might be in the offing. The statement made by Usyk’s agent was as follows: “Probably yes [the contracts have been issued], but we have not received them yet. Yes, we are on our way.”
