Come Saturday, and David Benavidez will enter the ring to defend his WBC (interim) super middleweight title from Demetrius Andrade. Obviously, this is the match everyone would be looking forward to at the Michelob ULTRA Arena. However, the event hosts other exciting line-ups that include world titles as well. Apart from the Benavidez-Andrade bout, there will be Jermall Charlo vs. Jose Benavidez Jr. for the WBC middleweight title, Hector Garcia‘s super featherweight title defense against Lamont Roach. Then Subriel Matias will have to defend his IBF light welterweight title from Shohjahon Ergashev.

Initially, it appeared that Matias would fight Sergey Lipinets as part of his voluntary title defense. However, the IBF jumped in and gave him marching orders to instead face the mandatory Ergashev from Uzbekistan. Reportedly, TGB Promotions, representing Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), paid around $510,000 to secure the promotional rights to the fight.

Since beginning his professional career eight years ago, Subriel Matias has so far participated in twenty fights over the last eight years. With the sole exception of one defeat he suffered at the hands of Petros Ananyan in February 2020, the Puerto Rican won the rest of the bouts. All his wins came through knockouts, giving him the rare distinction of maintaining a 100% knockout-to-win rate.

Shohjahon Ergashev also began his professional career around the same time that Matias did. He remains unbeaten in his 23 outings. Though his knockout percentage does tally Matias’ centum score, he too seems to display a predisposition towards early stoppages. Ergashev’s knockout-to-win rate stands at 87%.

Subriel Matias vs. Shohjahon Ergashev: Net Worth and Other Facts

Subriel Matias became the IBF light welterweight champion on February 25 of this year. He defeated the Argentine Jeremias Ponce, forcing a fifth-round corner retirement. It is interesting to note that, including the last against Ponce, Matias extracted a similar outcome in the last three consecutive fights. Given the sheer aggressive style of both boxers, the bout is expected to be fiery.

For Shohjahon Ergashev, it’s the first attempt at a world title. Hence, he could be expected to go at full charge with a nothing-to-lose attitude. Whereas, for Matias, the first title defense, a cautious, calculating approach could be witnessed. More so, a win would let him claim a place in the future line-ups for title unification in the 140-pound division, which is already undergoing a lot of shuffle.
