Back in 2011, Helenius secured the biggest win of his career after beating Dereck Chisora via a split decision. This was a landmark win for the Finnish boxer, although many felt that Chisora secured the victory. However, this victory would come at a price for Helenius after it was revealed that he suffered from a shoulder injury before the fight.

A look into Robert Helenius’ shoulder injury

It was reported that he had torn a tendon in his shoulder while training for the fight, which only worsened after he faced Del Boy. Following his victory, Helenius had to go through reconstructive surgery on his shoulder, which put him out of action for almost a year. Even after recovering, the injury seemed to last with him.

He fought just once in 2012 and 2013 and then took a hiatus of 2 years. During this period, he was forced to move back from his training camp in Germany to Finland and work in construction and logging. Things didn’t seem to go too well for him after his return to the sport in 2016. He notably lost to Johann Duhaupas and Dillian Whyte passing up hopes of challenging for a title.

However, things started getting better for Helenius after his shoulder pain went away in 2018. This allowed him to train properly for the first time since 2011, after which he went on to knock out Erkan Teper in Germany. He would then suffer a setback loss to Gerald Washington but has not lost a bout since then. Now at 38 years old, after going through a life-changing ordeal, his determination will be tested against Wilder. He now has a chance of redeeming himself and getting back into a title fight.
