‘When It Comes to Attraction in USA, He Means Nothing’ – Leonard Ellerbe Explains Why He Dismissed Josh Taylor vs. Gervonta Davis

Just ahead of Gervonta Davis’ attempt at reigning at the top of three weight divisions simultaneously, his manager Leonard Ellerbe discussed future prospects for the champ. The CEO of Mayweather Promotions said that Davis would be looking for fights of bigger magnitude after getting past WBA (Regular) Super-Lightweight champion Mario Barrios this weekend.
During the media scrum, Ellerbe acknowledged that Davis will look for interesting names at Lightweight rather than at 140 pounds.
“Tank is willing to fight anybody. It just has to make sense,” he said.

Talking about Daviss future at super lightweight, he said, “He’s not campaigning at 40. If there’s the right fight there, you take it. If it’s something big, it makes sense, yeah.”
The undisputed crown of the Super lightweight division rests with Josh ‘The Tartan Tornado’ Taylor. However, he won’t be on the radar of Davis after the fight this Sunday. Ellerbe elaborated that the Brit is not a ‘money fight’ for Davis.
“Let me clear that up, Taylor just won the undisputed junior welterweight championship, right? There was only a thousand people in attendance.
“At the end of the day all of these guys are good fighters. But you got to be able to bring something to the dance. Because it does take two to tango. You can’t just say, ‘Oh, I just want to fight the champ!’,” he said.
Elaborating his stance more about a possible Taylor fight, Leonard Ellerbe told Fino Boxing, “Josh Taylor’s the undisputed champion. Of course he is, but when it comes to attraction in the United States of America, he means nothing. Other than to the die hard fans, that’s no knock on Taylor. Cause, I think he is a very good fighter. He is big in his country Scotland. I am sure he is sold out venues over there. But it’s different world in the United States.”
