“You Don’t Think You Can Die, Do You?”: Once Bankrupt Mike Tyson Gives People With “False Sense of Security” a Harsh Reality Check

Mike Tyson is well-known for his robust and resilient nature inside the ring during his prime days of boxing. But his resilience was never just limited to his boxing, as Tyson has always been a fighter, inside and out. There was a time, when Tyson was in debt of $38.4 million, after losing all of his $400 million (approx) net worth, and in 2004, he was forced to file for bankruptcy. But as we all know, Tyson made a comeback financially, in fact, this setback worked as a pull of the catapult for him, only to get hurled over far ahead. Currently, he has multiple revenue sources; he’s got Tyson 2.0, his own cannabis company, Tyson Pro gloves company, and his own podcast, Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson.

Tyson revealed his way of thinking in the recent episode of his podcast with special guest J Balvin. He talked about how money shouldn’t be given much attention, and this is not a new idea for Mike Tyson, as he’s never given much attention to money as such in his life.

Tyson took up the topic of money, in the conversation with J Balvin, and stated that money does something very peculiar to people. He then goes on to say that money “steals your soul“. This intrigued the guest of the podcast, and he asked Tyson, what does he think about the fact that money can bring out the best and worst version of a person.

Tyson replied, “Money to me is the false sense of security.” He then revealed that he’s given this advice to a lot of rich people, and in turn, ended up giving them a harsh reality check. He said, “I said you don’t think you can die, do you?” He revealed that rich people when they have a lot of money, falsely believe that they have some kind of armor against everything, even death.

What does money mean to Mike Tyson?

Seven years ago, in 2016, Mike Tyson appeared on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, where Bensinger asked him about Tyson’s subjective meaning of money. Tyson, at first, joked about it saying it was just “paper blood” and laughed. He then enunciated that money never mattered much to him due to his poor background.

He described himself as a “never been really a money type of guy“. He also said that nobody taught him ever how to handle his money, and how to smartly spend his money on things. And then suddenly he got a lot of money, and that’s why it became difficult for him to manage it at the time.

Mike Tyson’s life is indeed a testament that despite hitting rock bottom, there’s always a way to come back stronger. He’s an inspiration to the youth of today.
