Crawford’s candid advice: ‘Get your feet wet’ with lower-tier boxers
On The MMA Hour, Crawford didn’t shy away from expressing his doubts about Ngannou’s potential transition from MMA to boxing. Acknowledging Ngannou’s strength as an MMA fighter, he underlined the stark differences between the two sports. Moreover, He also talked about the implications they could have for the former MMA champion’s prospects.
Crawford said, “Listen, that guy is a puncher. He’s doing his thing in MMA, but it’s different over there, you know calling out the top heavyweights of the world today. I don’t see him having a chance with either one of those guys, and that’s just being honest.”
Despite recognizing Ngannou’s skills, Crawford advised the MMA star to start at the grassroots level in boxing. He emphasized that Ngannou should gain some experience in the ring, get a feel of the sport, and adjust to the unique challenges it poses before taking on heavyweight champions.
“He’s got some skills. I would tell him, get your feet wet, try to fight some of those lower-tier guys first. Just to feel yourself out, and get used to being in the ring, going rounds. It’s different. MMA and boxing are different,” Crawford said.
He went on to provide a stark warning about the potential dangers that await Ngannou in the boxing ring, especially if he takes on someone like Deontay Wilder.
“Because one guy that you’re going to get one shot — and if you mess up, you’re going to be knocked out into next week for messing with — [is] Deontay Wilder. If he hits you, you’re going to sleep… Tyson Fury, he went to sleep and woke up. I don’t see too many other guys doing that. Deontay Wilder is one of the biggest punchers ever, so just keep that in mind,” Crawford cautioned.
Will Ngannou heed Crawford’s advice, gradually stepping into the ring with lower-tier boxers, or will he plunge headfirst into the challenge of heavyweight boxing?
