Naoya Inoue Set to Revive Arena Dead Since Mike Tyson’s Defeat In 1990

On May 6th, Naoya Inoue will defend his undisputed Super-Bantamweight title against Luis Nery. While Inoue is currently undefeated with 26 wins, Nery has only one loss and 35 professional victories! Likewise, the boxing world is excited to see the two battle. However, before the fight, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman recently honored ‘Monster’ with the Boxer of the Year 2023 award.
In addition, the WBC reminded the boxing world that Inoue would revive Tokyo Dome which saw the historical Mike Tyson vs. James Buster Douglas fight in 1990. In the fight, Douglas shocked everyone when he defeated ‘Iron’ Mike. Anyway, here is what the WBC wrote on Instagram.

In February 1990, with the IBF, WBA, and WBC Heavyweight titles on the line, Mike Tyson shared the ring with James Douglas. Although 23-year-old Tyson arrived with 0 losses and 37 wins, Douglas was ready for the baptism of fire. As a result, the underdog fought toe-to-toe. Despite getting knocked down by a destructive uppercut in the 8th round, Buster got up to handle business.

After hitting Tyson with a powerful right hand, an uppercut, and a 1-2, Buster Douglas did the unthinkable – knock out the undisputed Heavyweight champion of the world, ‘Iron Mike’. And now, since Tyson’s loss to Douglas, Tokyo Dome will host a boxing event for the first time in 34 years as Naoya Inoue will defend his undisputed Super-Bantamweight title against Luis Nery.

Ahead of this match, the WBC presented Inoue with Boxer of the Year 2023 Recognition at the Ohashi Boxing Gym in Yokohama Japan. In addition, they wrote, “Inoue is preparing to make his WBC mandatory title defense this coming May 6 against former champion Luis Nery at the Tokyo Dome which represents a huge event as this is the first boxing event in this colossal venue since Mike Tyson lost to Buster Douglas.”
