Swapping jerseys nowadays has become a mark of respect between players in the NBA. This ritual is often witnessed after tough games as the players cross rival teams to show the friendship that exists outside the court. Notable stars like Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving practice such a post-game tradition. But not all the time it is going to be returned, like when Irving passed on his jersey to Dillon Brooks without getting one in return.
Another recent addition to this jersey exchange tradition is forward Grant Williams from the Dallas Mavericks, who recently arrived from the Boston Celtics. He had to duel with basketball legend LeBron James. The clash, a mere 7 seconds that would resonate beyond the game, unfolded into a surprising display of grit and mutual respect.

He said, “If you ask Bron about the moment, I would love to hear his response on what he thought initially. I’ve always been big on never backing down from anyone, no matter what standing or the person you are. I’m willing to speak up or be a guy who’s going to not be pushed over. There’s definitely a level of respect.”
Williams gave a different insight into the practice of swapping jerseys in the NBA. He disclosed that he asked for a jersey only when he earned respect as a player. He confessed, “I say until you respect me as a player, don’t give me a jersey. I earned this guy’s respect later, and I think I ended up getting LeBron’s jersey the following week.”
For Williams, getting LeBron’s jersey was more than a sportsmanlike gesture; it was a sign that he had indeed earned his respect. The jersey swap was an emotional moment as it meant validation from one of his long-admired players, LeBron.
