Cover art in games is a very crucial thing. Fans get a glimpse inside those games and their visuals through the cover art. Characters, locations, and sometimes minor details related to the game world are frequently included in the box art by the developers and the marketing.

And then comes box art for sports titles, which becomes even more crucial. It tells gamers and fans what kind of roster that particular game focuses on. They are also often dedicated to legendary sportsmen. The most recent example of such a thing was Kobe Bryant being on the box art of NBA 2K 24.

This is why, when EA Sports decided to reveal FC 24 to its fans, they were somewhat excited. The company did not show any gameplay footage during the live stream. But they did give their fans a look at that game’s box art. This box art was not received very positively by fans. They have been talking about this box art online ever since. They have been comparing the faces shown on that box art to characters from PS2 games and such. And EA has indeed taken notice of this reaction too.

Nicholas Wlodyka, senior vice president and general manager of EA Sports FC, identifies with this problem. He mentions that this problem has happened due to them taking too long to acquire the likeness of players featured in the game.

And the time between getting the likeness and the game reveal livestream was pretty short. That’s why the faces on the cover art are not up to par.

While talking to Eurogamer, he specifically said, “You can’t pull that off in six months; it’s something you have to think about way ahead to be able to pull off.”
