Sony finally unveiled its unique-looking PlayStation 5 Slim model recently. That upgraded design of Sony’s console has no doubt enticed a number of new buyers into buying it come the holiday season. With a detached Ultra HD Blue Ray drive option, it leaves all the possibilities open for all kinds of gamers out there.

But as it has been discussed a number of times before, this would not be the only hardware the PlayStation 5 would get. It looks like Sony is still working on that Pro model, and its specs might have leaked online.

When the PlayStation 5 launched, its box had that big 8K written on it. That was not a promise, though; it was just some information that this console can output up to 8K resolution. How many games actually run at 8K on a PlayStation 5, though? One. A game called Touryst, a very light-hearted exploration game, runs at flawless 8K on a PlayStation 5. But that’s a game that even the Nintendo Switch can run in 4K if developers try hard enough.

What about massive games like God of War and Spider-Man 2? Sony’s PlayStation Pro might be an answer to that question. Those games already run at 4K on the base console and no doubt they look glorious. And now, if the recently leaked specs of the PlayStation 5 Pro console proved to be true, even these games would go up to 8K. If a user on Reddit is to be believed, this yet-to-be-announced console would be released with the following specs:

  • Eight-core Zen 2 CPU running at 4 GHz
  • RDNA 3 custom GPU running at 2500–2800 MHz
  • 16 GB of GDDR6 memory at 18000 MT/s

The clock speed is not yet locked in, as it is being suggested that Sony plans to release more than one variant of this console too. And let’s be honest, even at these numbers, this console would be an unmatched powerhouse. Marck Cerny sure knows how to keep surprising his fans.

A massive upgrade on the base model, for sure

While this might not seem like much to many, this console would still be a massive upgrade over the original model. Of course, not many gamers would feel the need to play games in 8K, but 4K 60 with all graphical upgrades turned up would not be a bad thing at all.

Here are the specs of the original PlayStation 5 for reference –

  • AMD Ryzen Zen 8 Cores/16 Threads at 3.5GHz
  • Ray Tracing Acceleration Up to 2.23 GHz with RDNA 3
  • 16GB GDDR6/256-bit

Upgrades to the processor as well as the GPU mean a much better-looking gameplay experience. Moving from RDNA 2 to RDNA 3 would mean better ray tracing and even better performance in games with ray tracing turned on.
