Nintendo has a very good reputation amongst gamers, all thanks to its treatment of its best IPs. The company’s dedication to keeping them feeling fresh even after years of releasing new games in those franchises endears it to most players. Some of their iconic franchises include Super Mario Bros. to The Legend of Zelda. But recently, Masahiro Sakurai revealed very surprising info about one of these series.

Similar to the case with the Super Smash Bros. franchise, a series of fighting games that remains unique even after all these years of constant new releases. Recently Masahiro Sakurai discussed how the iconic series almost came to an end!

Over the years Masahiro Sakurai has developed a reputation as a very hard-working developer in the industry. When his most recent game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched for Nintendo Switch, he said a bunch of times how he pushed himself to continue making games even when he was not feeling so well.

This is both worrisome and inspiring at the same time. But one cannot argue that he knows how to make games that really make people jump in excitement. But recently he talked on his YouTube channel about how he saved the Super Smash Bros. franchise from its imminent end.

He remembers how Smash Bros. Melee was a super successful title and fans could not get over it. During those days Nintendo president Satoru Iwata invited him for a discussion and told him about their next console Wii. Nintendo announced a Smash Bros for Wii but Sakurai was informed of it much later.

Iwata explained to him that this announcement was made to show people that the internet capability of this new console can be used to participate in only Smash games. And they now wanted Sakurai to make a multiplayer version of Melee. He then asked Iwata what would happen if he refused to develop the game as he was already busy with some projects.

Iwata told him they would have to find someone else. But Nintendo was aware the series would not be the same after Sakurai and would probably end with Wii Installment. He felt that he was kept in very high regard by Iwata. That is why he decided to continue with the Smash Bros series.

Goes to show that Iwata understood gaming, He actually was in touch with his customers. And people like Sakurai are why games remain as fun as they are nowadays.
