McLaren came into the 2022 season with a goal of competing with the top three teams – Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari. The change in regulations offered a huge chance for the team from Woking to get closer to the top. The MCL36 even showed potential during the testing in Barcelona. However, things took a turn for McLaren when Formula 1 moved to the Gulf.
A break cooling miscalculation meant McLaren struggled during the Bahrain testing. To add to their misery, Covid-19 ruled Daniel Ricciardo out of the testing. And both the drivers finished outside the points in the first race followed by the Australian’s retirement in Saudi Arabia. However, they bounced back in Australia collecting 18 points, much to the relief of the team.
With teams around them lining up new upgrades, team principal Andreas Seidl has given a hint that a larger upgrade is in place for McLaren. However, he remained tight-lipped regarding what the upgrade is.

Andreas Seidl reveals when the upgrade will take time
McLaren’s struggle in slow corners this year is well known. A change in the track’s design in Australia with quick corners made sure the team endured a good result. Andreas Seidl revealed that a larger package is in place, but the team will need time to install it.
He said, “It will take a while. The ambition is great, but we still need some patience. The budget and the wind tunnel time are limited. We have to combine several steps in one package. But we already have a clear plan that we have to work through now.”

McLaren has struggled with brake problems during the first two races. After a poor result in Bahrain, the team did relatively well in Jeddah. Lando Norris finished 7th while a DNF result marred Daniel Ricciardo’s race. However, a positive result in Australia has boosted them to 4th in the constructors’ championship.
Meanwhile, Alpine is one team that is introducing a new upgrade in Imola. Although McLaren aimed to compete with the top three during pre-season, their expectations now will be to finish on top of the midfield. With the A5-22 showing potential and matching the pace of the top teams, the Woking-based team will need to improve their performances quickly.
