In a season where F1 cut all its ties with Russia, given the removal of Sochi GP and Nikita Mazepin from the grid, a new Russian athlete has garnered interest in the racing drama. The tennis world number 1, Daniil Medvedev, recently pledged his alliance to the Formula 1 world number 1, Max Verstappen.

Even though he is currently in Cincinnati to take part in the Western and Southern Open, Medvedev is up to speed with all the action unfolding in the F1 2022 season. In an interview with Ziggo Sport, he commented on how the defending world champion has evolved since the previous season.

He said, “I respect Max. He’s an amazing driver, especially. I would even say more this year for me than last year. This year, the consistency is so strong,”

Furthermore, The member of the orange army couldn’t help but praise Verstappen’s performance last time out at the Hungarian GP. The Dutch driver who is habitual of starting a Grand Prix on the front row found himself all the way behind in the fifth row. Nevertheless, the Red Bull ace pulled the rabbit out of the hat by crossing the chequered as the victor.

The tennis pro was in awe of Verstappen’s talent as he added, “He started in P10, some people wanted Leclerc to win to have more of a championship fight. But Max won it. He’s just amazing,”

It is baffling how the Russian flag and the Dutch flag are so similar, given they share the red, blue, and white color scheme; but in a different order. Just like the flag, Medvedev and Verstappen are very similar in terms of natural talent; but in different sports.

After 22 races in the season, it was the last lap of the last race that presented us with a name to be inscribed on the driver’s title.

Medvedev, who has clinched 14 ATP titles in his career, is no stranger to competing till the dying moments of a match. The 2019 US Open match against Rafael Nadal springs to mind where the Russian found himself in a deadlock against the Spaniard. Remarkably, the grand slam final lasted 4 hours and 50 minutes and unfortunately, Medvedev came second best.

With 9 races remaining in the season, the 26-year-old tennis superstar has put his money over the reigning F1 champion winning the title once again this season; as he commented on if the championship has already concluded before the summer break.

He said, “In my opinion, yes. But when I say it, I’m a sportsman, so I know it’s not true. As a fan, I say yes, I think so. But as a sportsman, I say nothing is decided until the last point.”
