Did 16th July 2023 mark the changing of the guard? Could it be that Novak Djokovic’s reign finally coming to a close? While that is debatable, his reign at Wimbledon—a four-year winning streak—ended. And it came at the hands of the 20-year-old world number 1, Carlos Alcaraz. Blood, sweat, and tears—Djokovic laid everything out on Centre Court for almost five hours, but this time—unlike all his other comebacks, it just wasn’t meant to be. But it was for Carlos Alcaraz because he ensured he’d lift the Cup as the sun set over SW19 for the last time this Wimbledon.

Alcaraz is the personification of “it isn’t over till it’s over.” He’ll chase down every possible ball, turn defense into offense, and dig himself out of impossible situations. Remind you of someone else? Novak Djokovic, maybe? During the match, people even said Nole’s getting a taste of what it’s like to play himself. After Alcaraz lost the first set, he dug deep, hung on to every opportunity, turned situations in his favor, and came out victorious. And while Alcaraz expressed his pride and thanked his team for helping him win, an F1 driver took a little of credit away from Alcaraz and his team.

Oscar Piastri gave Carlos Alcaraz a “pep talk”

Oscar Piastri is a sportsperson through and through. Born in Melbourne, he practically grew up just minutes away from what could be called the holy trinity of sports venues in Australia—Melbourne Park, home to the happiest Grand Slam in tennis, the Australian Open; the Melbourne Cricket Ground, one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world; and Albert Park, home to the Australian GP. Piastri was surrounded by sports as a youngster, and well, he’s a Formula 1 driver now and a very talented one at that. But he still keeps cricket and tennis close to his heart, as he has proved in the past few weeks.

After the Canadian GP, Piastri headed to London to watch the Queen’s Club Championships two weeks before Wimbledon started. Apart from meeting Andy Murray—one of the Big Four—he also met Carlos Alcaraz. With just about two years between them, they’re both at the beginning of their promising careers. So when they met in London, they seemingly had a lot to discuss, a tidbit of which Piastri revealed after Alcaraz’s victory at Wimbledon.

Wimbledon was Alcaraz’s fourth tournament on grass, and considering his win yesterday, he’s won two of the four tournaments—Queen’s being the other one after he met with Piastri. After Carlos sealed his maiden Wimbledon last night—becoming only the third Spaniard to win it—Oscar took to Instagram to congratulate him. He posted a picture of their meeting in Queen’s on his story and captioned it, “Pep talk at Queen’s Club worked!😉”

Seemingly, Oscar took some of the credit as Alcaraz not only won Queen’s but also won the most iconic Grand Slam, Wimbledon. Although he couldn’t make it to SW19 for the finals, Piastri made it to the quarterfinals earlier in the week.

Oscar Piastri keeps up with the traditions at Wimbledon

Piastri visited SW19 the day Carlos Alcaraz had his quarterfinal match-up against Holger Rune in Centre Court. While George Russell had access to the Royal Box to witness the match, Piastri and his girlfriend, Lily Zneimer, watched Daniil Medvedev take on Christopher Eubanks on Court 1. In the thrilling match-up, Oscar and Emily witnessed a five-set thriller in all its glory.

And they kept up with a Wimbledon tradition too. Strawberries and cream. It’s become a staple at SW19 every year, and no one’s Wimbledon visit can be complete without it. And to experience the Championships for what it is, Oscar and Emily made it a point to fulfill the strawberries and cream tradition during their visit.
