It’s hard to imagine being on the receiving end of a Mike Tyson punch. The Baddest Man on the planet is one of the best-ever heavyweight boxers in the world. However, Daniel Ricciardo once compared his retirement from the 2018 German Grand Prix to getting hit by Tyson after an unfortunate race.

For the 2nd time in 3 races, the Honey Badger was forced to retire from a GP. Starting P19 in the race, the Red Bull driver quickly started to make his move upward. However, mid-way through the race, Ricciardo suffered an engine failure and had to retire his RB14.

After the incident in Germany, Ricciardo had slipped to P5 in the World Driver’s Championship. A disappointed Ricciardo tweeted after the race in Hockenheim, “Roll with the punches. Even if they’re coming from Tyson.”

Ricciardo said after the race that he felt it was shifting in his favor before the unfortunate event. Moreover, the car’s engine troubles did not help the Australian’s case.

Daniel left Red Bull at the end of that season. He joined Renault in a bid to win the title with the French constructors.

Daniel joined Renault and then McLaren in his bid to win the title. However, his moves have not paid off and the Australian now finds himself as the number 3 driver at Red Bull Racing.

David Coulthard said In the Fast Lane podcast, “I think he needs to step away, take stock and rediscover whatever it was that was working for him in the first part of his Formula 1 journey. He’s young enough and fit enough to be able to get back to that place.”

He further added, “Success brings a lot of things and it brings baggage. Maybe some of that baggage is really expensive designer baggage, but it still has to be carried. For some people, that slows them down.”
