Earlier today, Honda released a statement at their headquarters. “Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today announced that it has decided to conclude its participation in the FIA Formula One (F1) World Championship as a Power Unit at the end of the 2021 season,” the statement read.
Mclaren were the first team to receive an Engine from Honda back in 2015. The three-year collaboration with Mclaren came to an end after the 2017 season. The three years were miserable for Honda as they failed to give Mclaren a fast car. It was the prime reason as to why Mclaren terminated their deal with Honda.
Later in 2018, Toro Rosso became the second team on the grid opting for Honda’s Engines. But this time around, Honda gave the team a decent engine that helped Toro Rosso to step up and fight with the mid-field teams.
Eventually, in the 2019 season, after witnessing Toro Rosso’s performance, Red Bull joined their sister team to get their Engines from the Japanese company. This year is the second season for both the teams to receive the Engines from Honda. The teams have also likely planned their future in Formula 1 with Honda.
