Fernando Alonso has rightly earned the nickname lion heart for his fearless racing. This daring and often aggressive nature of racing has made the Spaniard a two-time world champion. However, even someone as bold as Alonso sometimes can come across instances that strike fear in their hearts. This is exactly what happened to Alonso at the US Grand Prix.

After overtaking Gasly following the safety car restart, Alonso was on the heels of his future teammate Lance Stroll. Alonso pulled up on the left of the Aston Martin man before Stroll turned left as well. The resulting collision made Alonso airborne.

Going airborne in any situation, especially with the high speeds of an F1 car, can be extremely dangerous. The soon-to-be Aston Martin man echoed the same feeling during his post-race interview.

“I’m happy to be here talking with you because I could surely be in the medical center. So I’m happy for that. — When I was in the air, I was a bit scared because it was very dangerous,” he told DAZN Espana.

The Spaniard’s car somehow survived the incident, and Alonso continued the race. However, the crash consumed Alonso’s thoughts until the very end. He revealed, “After the crash, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for the rest of the race. I just wanted to finish the race.”

The Spaniard continued the race and eventually finished the race with an incredible result. Despite the fear, Alonso pushed until the end, which was, according to him, the “best race of the season”.

Despite the crash, Alonso could continue the race, and the Spaniard pushed his car until the end. The on-track resurgence saw Alonso cross the checkered line in the seventh position. An incredible result for Alonso, as he expressed the same in his interview.

“When I landed on the asphalt, I thought it was race over. That’s what I thought when I entered the pits… In the end, to finish seventh is incredible. The last laps, I was pushing like it was qualifying. It was my best race of the season, but the fear is still in my stomach,” Alonso expressed.

Sadly, for Alonso, the Spaniard received a 30-second penalty after the race and dropped to P15 from P7. Despite the final result, Alonso can be proud of his incredible racing and we’re glad to see the dangerous crash wasn’t harmful to either of the drivers.
