“We look like a bunch of Wan***s,” said Guenther Steiner, rewriting history books of the Drive to Survive docuseries. Netflix series Drive to Survive breathed a new life and millions of audience into the niche sport of Formula 1. While the show brought an explosion of American viewership to the European sport, the American team Haas benefitted from it immensely as well. Their TP, Guenther Steiner, became a household name for his quirky personality. However, the man now seems suffering with popularity as a consequence.

Liberty Media began with the overhaul of the way the world looked at F1 after their takeover in 2017. The intention was to bring attention to the sport. And the organization of a whooping three Grands Prix in the States is a testament that the sport has in fact penetrated into the Western parts of the world. Many, including Daniel Ricciardo, saw their popularity double with the show. However, some, like Steiner, saw it for the first time. While Steiner has no regrets over it, the man, who is now burdened with fame, has agreed to play the game.

As quoted by Motorsports-Nextgen, Steiner said, he has “never watched” the show and wants to avoid it to feel stay away from the popularity pressure. Justifying it he said, “If you watch yourself, you change, and I don’t want to do that. You want to do better or improve. But I’m not not an actor, so I don’t need to do better. If I don’t watch, I don’t feel pressure on what to do next time. I don’t want to change. There’s no point in doing it. do now.”

Citing instances of his recognition, he said, “So yeah it’s true, on the street when someone spots you, the crowd comes. Having a quiet dinner outside of the races can be difficult…no it’s not difficult, it’s just people wanting you talk.” But even though it has been difficult he knows the rules of the game, he said, “I always lend myself to the game because it would be arrogant not to, and I’m not arrogant. If it’s a bad day, then you don’t go out to dinner and that’s it.”

While it has done Haas and Guenther a lot of good to become popular faces of the sport, Season five showcased some brutal behind-the-scenes footage. And it involves Guenther being brutal to Mick Schumacher.

Toto Wolff sides with the Schumacher name to call out Guenther Steiner for his harsh treatment

Steiner was seen calling out Mick, branding him a slow driver who doesn’t need brakes and treating the new man in F1 rather brutally. After Mick’s ousting he shifted base to Mercedes and now the boss, Toto Wolff, has taken him as his own, clapping back at the Haas TP for rude treatment of the German.

As quoted by Crash.Net, Toto said, “I can only say that his parents did nothing wrong in bringing him up. And I claim that if Michael had accompanied his son during the two Haas years, Steiner would not have dared to treat Mick like that!”
