DTS Rockstar Guenther Steiner Pins the Blame on Netflix After Being Accused of Harassing F1 Prodigy

The 2022 season did not go as well as Mick Schumacher would have liked it. Not only did he fail to score points more often than not, but he also crashed the car way too often which, for an arguably cash-strapped team like Haas, is a big red flag. This saw the relationship between team boss Guenther Steiner and Mick turn sour. Nico Hulkenberg eventually replaced Schumi Jr. The latest season of F1: Drive to Survive gave us a behind-the-scenes view of the whole saga, which showed how Steiner may have gone a little overboard with his criticism of Mick on multiple occasions. The Haas boss has now come out defending himself, making Netflix the scapegoat for his own deeds.

Steiner is not a man known to share a special bond with his drivers. In 2020, after a bout of serious in-fighting between his drivers, the team boss got rid of both Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean. In 2021, he fielded an all-rookie lineup in Mick and Nikita Mazepin. However, within a year, he and the team owner got into an ugly spat with Mazepin, getting rid of him as well after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And then we saw what happened with Schumacher in 2022.

Nextgen-Auto recently quoted him as saying, “Netflix shows the worst moments or aspects of a day, and that’s obviously what the show has to do.” [Translated using Google]

It is not just the drivers that get an adrenaline rush during a race. Every team member is on the heat and that is the time, Steiner feels when such words come out unhinged.

A race requires some quick decisions on every team member’s part. When the results do not come after that, the blame game starts, at least until calm prevails. Guenther too feels most of his angry comments on Mick came under such anxious circumstances.

“I didn’t watch [Drive To Survive], but I made those comments yes, so I remember some details…,” he told. “I think they didn’t show everything I said, just the heat of the moment.”

“And in the heat of the moment, as a racer, you say things that I wouldn’t say now, for example. Do not go too far to analyze my mental state!”
