Fernando Alonso Reveals the Only Thing Motivating Him Amidst Alpine’s F1 Struggles

Fernando Alonso returned to Formula One after a hiatus of two years. He joined the newly branded Alpine team to replace the McLaren-bound Daniel Ricciardo. The two-time world champion initially struggled, but soon found his footing and his form.
He and the team continued their partnership for another year. When asked about the motivation behind his decision to stay in F1, Alonso mentioned he wants a third-world title.

Fernando Alonso eying another world championship in F1
Alonso, who turned 40 this year, knows that he does not have many years left in the sport. The Spaniard last won his championship in 2006, since then he has finished second in 2010, 2012, and 2013.

“Inside, I have the same spirit and the same racing ambitions, and winning the third championship is the only thing that motivates me. But with time, you realize that not everything is under your control, there are things you cannot maybe overcome.

The former world champion will turn 41 next year and stated that he has no plans to leave the sport soon. Fernando mentioned if he is not competitive he will leave the sport.

“I will see year by year. I will first have to enjoy continuing in F1 and feel I am fast enough. If one day I feel I am not competitive, I don’t feel the car; I am not enjoying the racing, I will be the first one to raise my hand and give an opportunity to a new guy.
But hopefully, that doesn’t happen so I can keep racing for, I don’t know, at least two, three, four years.” said the Alpine driver.

Alonso will become the most experienced driver on the grid next season with the retirement of Raikkonen. The veteran has over 320 starts in the sport.
