Four Young F1 Hopefuls Compete for a Place in the Ferrari Driver Academy

The Ferrari driver academy is one of the most prestigious driver development programs in the world. One of the most notable names from the extensive list is Mick Schumacher, F1 legend Michael Schumacher’s son.

However, even though they already have talented drivers in their program, such as Callum Illot, Robert Schwartzman, and Arthur Leclerc, the Italian team continue to bring in talent that could help them in their search for glory in the future.

Most young drivers dream of being a part of the prestigious driver’s academy. Being affiliated with Ferrari could help them feature on the F1 grid.

As reported by SoyMotor, the Maranello-based team has shortlisted drivers from all across the globe. Oliver Bearman from England, Tuukka Taponen from Finland, Rafael Chaves Camara from Mexico, and Jesse Lacey from Australia.

The drivers arrived yesterday at the team’s factory and were given physical and psychological tests to understand whether they could handle the pressure on and off the track.

On Thursday they will be behind the wheel of a Formula 4 with used tires from F4’s Italian Grand Prix. Later, Dino Beganovic & James Wharton, winners of the 2020 finals, will join them.

Beganovic will be in charge of setting a reference time for the drivers. Wharton, on the other hand, is said to be at the disposal of the drivers. After that, the engineers at the driver academy will decide who will be part of the team’s future.

Can Mick drive for the Italian team in the future?

It is no secret that the Formula One community would love to see the Schumacher name back in a Ferrari. However, Mick is completing his first season on the grid with Haas and could have to wait before getting the seat at the red team.

Team Principal Mattia Binotto hopes to see Mick grow and learn in his debut season. He said, “Mick in his very first year in F1 driving for Haas, I think we said at the start of the season that the objective for him was first no pressure, but to make sure that he is learning.”

“So 2021 has to be for him an important year in terms of learning. And I think if we look at that objective he is doing well,” Binotto concluded.

With a few remaining races left this season, Schumacher Jr will hope to have learned valuable lessons on the grid and will aim to improve himself in 2022, with the goal of driving for Ferrari in the coming years
