It has been a tough season and a half for Mercedes after the new car design regulations kicked in. This has prevented Lewis Hamilton from competing for the record-breaking 8th WDC. But Mercedes’ recent upgrades introduced at the Monaco GP act as grounds for hope. But what exactly did Mercedes do that suddenly propelled both their drivers to the podium at the Spanish GP?

Mercedes brought in multiple upgrades that included a new front suspension (according to chaseyoursport.com, cost anywhere between $500k to $1 million), floor, changed bellies, and other secondary components. The transformative upgrades couldn’t show much difference at Monaco, but Hamilton felt that they had taken a step in the right direction. Mercedes had their eyes set on Barcelona because that is where they would see the results of their efforts.

Team Principal Toto Wolff knew that bringing in so many upgrades was a big risk taken by them. But a new front suspension and an improved floor design for the W14 proved to be just what Mercedes needed. And in Spain, the W14 allowed Hamilton to show why he is one of the greatest and George Russell to prove why he is champion-material. They left the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz and both the Aston Martin in the dust.

With the new and improved W14, Hamilton took a step closer to Max Verstappen’s RB19. And in a surprising turn of events, their off-track relationship appeared closer than usual as well.

Max Verstappen won the Spanish GP, and accompanying him on the podium were the two Mercedes drivers. But Hamilton and Verstappen didn’t just share the podium, they also shared a few smiles and laughs.

But that is not the entirety of it. The F1 Instagram page shared a video of Hamilton putting on sunglasses during a press conference, owing to very bright indoor lights. Commenting on Hamilton’s ‘new look’, Max chuckled and said, “That looks good! Maybe we can come in with our helmets on next time.” And in the cooldown room, they also shared a laugh at the expense of Ferrari’s mismanaged tire strategy.
