The focus of the drivers’ market has predominantly been on the second Mercedes seat; many forget that Sergio Perez’s appearance next year isn’t confirmed either. In an exclusive interview with Motorsport, Max Verstappen shares his thoughts on the future of the Red Bull sister car.
The championship protagonist simply stated, “I’ve not really thought about that. I’m very focused on this year and we’ll see what happens next year.”
As the team’s number one driver, the role of the second driver would be crucial. While Sergio Perez has been doing a good job as a second driver, he hasn’t had the best individual performance. Has the curse of the Red Bull seat struck again with the Mexican?

Max Verstappen seems to like Perez though, “I think so far it’s been great and to be able to work together now upfront to get the best result for the team is what you want.” Commenting on Checo’s future with the team, he said, “For sure, I would want that to continue. And yes, he’s a great teammate and we can have a lot of fun as well.”

On the other hand, team boss Helmut Marko isn’t too happy with Perez. Marko is rumored to scout for younger talent. Keeping Gasly and Albon out of the picture, he may look for an F2 or F3 candidate for the seat.
Additionally, Christian Horner has suggested that Checo will stay with the team. He praised Perez, saying, “I think Sergio has delivered the role that we’ve been hoping for.” Moreover, he added, “He’s been collecting those constructors’ points, and playing the team game… He’s a great team player and we’re very happy with the job he’s doing.

Verstappen is away from the confusion, secure in his seat, and focused on the win. Heading to two consecutive home races, will the Lion retrieve his championship position.
