Lewis Hamilton, former World Champion and a pillar for Mercedes, encountered a challenging race. After an optimistic start, securing a position as high as fourth, Hamilton’s car began to falter.

A mere 17 laps in, he faced a penalty for exceeding track limits. The distress was palpable when he radioed his engineer, Peter Bonnington, stating, “This car’s slow, mate,” and further venting, “I can’t keep it on the track, the car won’t turn.” In a rare moment, Wolff intervened over the team radio, stating, “Lewis, the car is bad, we know. Please drive it.” His message was direct, aimed at recalibrating the focus on the race at hand.

However, as the dust settled after the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix, the atmosphere seemed different. A renewed Hamilton said, “I am incredibly proud of my team. I have total faith in the team.” For the first time in recent memory, Hamilton expressed genuine satisfaction with the car’s performance, a stark contrast to his comments at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The Brit further added, “I know we can build a great car. We haven’t built one in the last two years, but we can. We have to be very strategic and clinical.” The back-to-back P2 finishes in the US & Mexico (only one retained courtesy of the US GP DSQ) certainly seemed to have turned a corner in terms of optimism from Hamilton. The most pleased man from this would be Toto Wolff.
