Mercedes Reportedly Set to Receive a Big Boost over F1 Rivals for 2021

Mercedes, Honda, Ferrari, and Renault are the only power-unit manufacturers on the grid. Currently, the Brackley team is leading the pack with the most powerful engine unit. Their closest competitor, however, Ferrari, have seen a significant engine woe in the last F1 season.
The teams are always looking for a way to improve their power unit. According to a report, the Brackley team‘s 2021 power unit could provide for more than 25 horsepower more. This will allow for a significant leap of 1,022 horsepower on the already powerful 2020 engine.
Interestingly, Lorenzo Sassi, a former Ferrari driver, heads the development of the combustion chamber of the Mercedes power unit.

“The Tuscan engineer is the chief designer who deals with the combustion and thermodynamics of the engine: in the Abu Dhabi tests on the W11 a different cooling system was experimented which was specifically designed not to affect the reliability of the new power unit. more powerful and improve aerodynamic efficiency,” states the report.

Lorenzo Tassi comes highly appreciated by James Allison. The Tuscan has played a significant role in Mercedes’ engine development. He’s helped Mercedes gain an edge over the Scuderia’s power unit before their sanctions.
“Those ideas that had been contested against Ferrari in the management of Sergio Marchionne are working in Mercedes,” the report pointed out.
