The silly season is in full swing, with plenty of drivers still unconfirmed for the 2023 season. The pot initially stirred up by Sebastian Vettel’s shock retirement announcement is still bubbling. Confirming his departure on social media, Latifi wrote, “So, I’m parting ways with Williams Racing at the end of the year. Honored to have represented them for the last 3 years. A massive thanks to the whole team – it’s been an incredible journey and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. Determined to end 2022 positively. 6 races left!”

The decision and its timing do not come as a surprise for many. Firstly, in his third season in the premier class, Latifi has only managed seven points in total. Secondly, debutant Nyck de Vries put Latifi to shame at the Italian GP. The debutant pushed Latifi to 21st in the 20-driver standing with his incredible P9 finish at the Italian GP.

The accumulation of poor performances and an expiring contract all led to Latifi losing out on his Williams seat. De Vries’s powerful performance in the same car did not help his case either. Moreover, the announcement is generating some interesting reactions.
