Revisiting Abu Dhabi Wounds, Lewis Hamilton Provides Simple Solution to Safety Car Debacle

One of the most awaited races of the season, the Italian Grand Prix was won by Max Verstappen. However, the race ended on a disappointing note as the safety car was deployed after Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren lost power. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, secured an impressive P5 finish.

The crowd was visibly disappointed and booed as Max Verstappen crossed the checkered flag behind the safety car. They wanted the FIA to let Verstappen and Leclerc race it out for the win. However, it wasn’t to be, much to the despair of the Tifosi.

Later on, Lewis Hamilton had his say on the incident. Lewis said“I mean, what’s the harm in extending it? Naturally, as a racer, you want more time. I wanted to be able to challenge the Ferrari ahead of me and see if I could get another position.”

The Mercedes driver, however, made peace with the decision and said, But I think in hindsight it was probably a good ending. I’m really grateful to have come back from the last row.”

Lewis started the race from the back of the grid alongside Yuki Tsunoda and finished the race in the top 5.

After challenging for the win in Zandvoort, Lewis had another impressive race in Monza. However, the British driver is still looking for his first win of the season.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff took a subtle dig at FIA with his statement regarding the Italian GP’s safety car issue. The Austrian praised the FIA for sticking to the rulebook but heaped the importance of maintaining consistency.

Toto said“That is the rule and you have to follow the rule. It might not have been a spectacular end to a race but rules are there and you have to follow them.”

He further added“At least they followed the rules and they accepted that the race finishes under the safety car. And this is how it should be, should have been…”

Lewis Hamilton was on the cusp of winning his 8th World Title when FIA’s controversial decision to unexpectedly call in the safety car allowed Max Verstappen to pounce on the opportunity and steal the title from the hands of the Briton.
