“This is Not the Championship Fight I Would Have Hoped For”: Lewis Hamilton After Winning the British Grand Prix

Just four races into the 2020 campaign and it already looks as though Lewis Hamilton may be the run-away Drivers’ Championship winner. Hamilton currently sits atop the table and has bagged up a 30 point lead on second-placed Valtteri Bottas.
Having won 3 of the 4 races this season, with no one other than Bottas being able to challenge him, Lewis admits it’s not the kind of racing he would have hoped for.
Sure, winning races and titles is every racer’s dream, but doing so with relative ease is no fun either. Hamilton hopes that this will change in the seasons to come.

Speaking to the media at Sunday’s post-race press conference for the British Grand Prix, Lewis said, “I’m a through and through racer at heart. I’ve grown up, particularly when you’re in karting, you’ve got the wheel to wheel racing, that’s what has always excited me, that’s what gets me up in the morning.
“This is not the championship fight I would have hoped for. I’d much, much prefer to be having a super close battle with these two here (Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc) because that’s what gets me going.
“I really, really hope in the future it’s closer.”
Lewis Hamilton thinks the FIA is taking a positive step in ensuring spicier races
While the Mercedes driver doesn’t blame his team for making the sport boring, he thinks the new rules will ensure more competitive races.

Hamilton said, “Ultimately every team is given rules and at the end of the day we’ve just done an exceptional job and you can’t fault my team for that.
“You have to look at the people that run the sport doing a better job moving forwards. I would say, ruling wise, I think they are showing some signs… I think Ross (Brawn) is showing us a car for the future that’s going to have us a lot closer.”
However, at least for the foreseeable future, it seems unlikely that Lewis or Mercedes’ dominance will come to an end. So don’t expect to see the likes of Verstappen get too many race wins this season.

Nevertheless, one shouldn’t prematurely dismiss the season as a bore. As we saw at Silverstone, the outcome of a race can change in the blink of an eye.
F1 fans will certainly hope for more such dramatic races throughout the 2020 season.
