The 33-year-old driver was closer to taking a sabbatical than buying into a project among the paddock’s teams. And now, with a drive to look forward to, he cannot wait to get started with the team. The German has signed up with the team for 2021 and beyond.

A fresh start for Sebastian Vettel next season

The move has been talked about, ever since the news broke out that Ferrari will not be extending Vettel’s contract next season. His immediate response was that he wanted a drive for 2021, but at the same time, not be desperate for anything that comes across.

The four-time World Champion preferred to be in a car that could, at the least, challenge for podiums. And it makes sense as well, considering it would be quite the fall in grace if he chose a team that lacks competitiveness.

“Everybody at Silverstone is hugely excited by this news. Sebastian is a proven champion and brings a winning mentality that matches our own ambitions for the future as Aston Martin F1 Team.

“On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, Sebastian is one of the best in the world, and I can’t think of a better driver to help take us into this new era. He will play a significant role in taking this team to the next level,” read Otmar Szafnauer’s statement.

Calculated move by Sebastian Vettel

Vettel had earlier said, “If the right thing comes together and comes up, I’m willing to continue. Then I feel I have much more to give. If that’s not the case and doesn’t come together then as I said, probably time to do something else.”

Vettel can now focus on spending his knowledge and energies on helping Aston Martin become a better outfit. The team certainly has a strong pairing for next season.

With the mighty Seb on one side and the youthful Lance Stroll on the other, it will be interesting to see how the team fares with a unique dynamic like this. In fact, the kind of relationship that the two develop throughout their stay will also be a matter of keen interest.

But regardless, it is set to be a wholly competitive one.
