Christian Horner has become a key stakeholder in the large-scale business that is F1. From an inexperienced team principal about 17 years ago when he entered F1, to a leading figure on the paddock, it has been an incredible journey for him. Horner was an integral part of the Red Bull juggernaut that won 4 consecutive championships from 2010 to 2013.

Christian Horner became the Team Principal for Red Bull Racing in 2005. Coming from the F3000 series, he didn’t possess much experience at the pinnacle of motorsport. As he learned the tricks of the trade, Horner became a solid leader for Red Bull.

Eventually, he delivered the dream successful run of 4 constructors titles with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

In a Sky Sports interview with Martin Brundle, Horner summarized his career story. He spoke about how his relationship with former F1 boss, Bernie Ecclestone, helped him.

Horner said, “Bernie [Ecclestone] was very good to me. He was very supportive from the moment I came into Formula 1. I just hit it off with him. He has got a very wicked sense of humor. You know we just got on to the point that I was his best man at his 3rd wedding.”

Horner, 49 today is one of the most respected individuals on the F1 circuit. While his good relationship with Bernie Ecclestone certainly may have helped Horner in fine-tuning his leadership skills. Ecclestone, 81 in 2012, had Horner as his best man for his third wedding.

While Christian never got his competitive racing career off the mark well, he molded world champions. He did not become a king of motorsport, but a kingmaker for Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

Christian Horner joined Red Bull racing just a few weeks before the 2005 season started. Red Bull was a team formed after buying the Jaguar F1 team. While Horner was an untutored team principal in F1, he helmed a crucial foundational period for the newly formed outfit.

After some reasonable results in 2005-06, Horner onboarded Adrian Newey, one of the top aerodynamics experts in F1. While Newey joined Red Bull in late 2005, the first Newey-designed car hit the track in 2007. Christian also switched to Renault engines during this time.

And within a couple of years, the Austrian team started achieving top-level performance and results. With a sturdy pair of Vettel and Webber, the Milton Keynes outfit finished runners-up in 2009. It was probably Horner’s management and Newey’s technical expertise that brought on 4 successive years of domination.

It was a pure journey of hard work and persistence, coupled with taking everyone together. Horner has delivered 6 drivers and 5 constructors titles for Red Bull and can be considered one of the most successful team principals in F1.
