George Russell, arguably the next big name in Formula 1 is all set to join Mercedes for the upcoming season. He will drive alongside Lewis Hamilton and the duo is expected to outpace other teams on the grid. However, Williams boss Jost Capito believes there will be an equally intense rivalry between the two teammates as well. The young Brit has impressed the F1 fraternity with his skills at a relatively younger age.

Russell has already put some impressive performances at the junior level. Needless to say, when he will get the car matching his caliber behind the wheel, he can certainly outperform most others on the track. The fans witnessed this last year at the Sakhir GP when he replaced Hamilton in his W-11.

Capito is confident that George Russell is technically and mentally capable of challenging the seven-time world champion in his first season. “Yes, he can. I’ve worked with a lot of drivers, but George is really great. Also how he can assemble a team behind him. At 23 he is already unbelievably far. Very important is his strength to deal with pressure. The greater the pressure, the stronger it becomes,” said Capito in an interview with Sport1.

Capito, who has worked with Russell in Williams is happy for him because “he’ll then be part of an absolutely top team.” The German team principal is of the opinion that “George is mentally, and technically strong enough to put pressure on Lewis. He wants that too, that’s why he competes.”

Alonso thinks Russell needs to bide his time before challenging Lewis

Although Russell’s current boss believes he has what it takes to challenge a multiple-time world champion, Spanish star Fernando Alonso has some reservations on the same. A big fan of George Russell’s racing himself, the two-time world champion knows a thing or two about the sport and he thinks it is still too early for Russell to be the main man in Mercedes.

“Even if George has been impressive, Lewis is the legend, a great champion and it is never going to be easy to beat him. It doesn’t matter how talented you are. For sure, it will be closer than it has been with Valtteri, but Lewis will be the main preference in the early part of the championship for Mercedes, no doubt,” said the Spaniard as reported by PlanetF1.
