Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement setting in motion the 2022 ‘silly season’. What many didn’t see coming was Fernando Alonso stepping in for the outgoing German. He made a switch to Aston Martin, leaving the paddock stunned with his unexpected move. The green team offered a multiyear contract to the Spaniard, and he jumped at the opportunity. It seems the El Plan has, in fact, worked. Fernando Alonso, 41 years old, is still on the grid with his guns blazing. Seeing this, a former boss has full faith in him.

Former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore was a part of Alonso’s most glorious years at the team. He sees this recent as a move that may prove beneficial for Alonso. He believes the double world champion has still got it in him. Flavio is of the opinion that the drive with which Alonso is still racing is a key factor in competing with young blood.

In an interview for DAZN, Briatore said, “Fernando is like a rottweiler. Aston Martin is getting a rottweiler and I’m convinced that Fernando can show one or two fantastic seasons. We have a new generation with great drivers like Max Verstappen and George Russell, and we have the drivers from another era who are a bit older, like Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso.” [Translated using Google]

The former boss is of the opinion that the grid full of exceptional young talents is a wonderful playground for Fernando to prove himself. Not that he has anything left to prove.

Alonso made a switch to multiple outfits, but could never really bring back the glory. Frustrated at not being able to find the right fit, he even retired. But who can keep someone like him away from F1? He soon made a comeback because he had unfinished business. Briatore thinks Fernando will have a great run at Aston Martin due to his ever-increasing hunger and outstanding physical fitness. He said, “As far as Fernando is concerned, I can only marvel – he is now even physically stronger than when he drove for me.
