World No.57 Danielle Collins produced a stunning performance in her third-round match at the French Open 2020. Collins ousted No.11 seed Garbine Muguruza in an epic match which lasted two hours and 28 minutes. Former champion Muguruza began each set with an early break but failed to capitalize on the start.

The match started at Court Suzanne Lenglen and got affected because of rain. After an hour and a half, the showdown resumed under the roof at Philippe Chatrier. Collins won the opening set 7-5 but Muguruza raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set by breaking Collins’ serve twice.

After leveling the match with a set apiece, Muguruza started with a double-break lead in the third set to take a commanding 3-0 lead. However, Collins showed tremendous mental strength and cut down the deficit to 4-3. The American won the last three games to clinch the victory and ended Muguruza’s streak of reaching the second week of Roland Garros every year since 2014.

“I’m feeling really accomplished. It was one of the bigger wins in my career. She’s an incredible champion, one of the best clay-courters on tour,” remarked Collins.
Reaching the second week of a Grand Slam after her 2019 Australian Open campaign, Collins seemed elated and talked about going deeper into the tournament. Collins will face No.30 seed Ons Jabeur in the fourth round at the French Open. The duo will play against each other for the first time.
“So I’m just really excited that I was able to beat a player like her and now move forward into the tournament. I haven’t made second week of a slam in a while, and it’s been one of my goals this year. I’m just feeling really grateful.” said Collins.
