The first trailer for GTA 6 is finally here! Many die-hard fans of the game series were waiting patiently for the title. And Rockstar Games did not disappoint. They delivered a classic GTA-style trailer, filled with fun and vibes. Yet there’s something that has irked many fans. The trailer shattered records with 118 million views at the time of writing, which speaks to the excitement and anticipation. But while players were thrilled about everything the trailer showed, there was one detail which has left a sour taste in the mouths of many. The release year.

The trailer shared 2025 as the release window for the game. This has caused an uproar in the community. But looking at the silver lining here, a release window of 2025 might actually be a good thing for GTA 6.

GTA 6 is going to be a benchmark for future AAA releases

Rockstar Games has also been a pioneer in the gaming industry. The devs have always done their best to make certain aspects of the game as realistic as possible. And with every release in the Grand Theft Auto series, be it GTA V or GTA Online, Rockstar Games has only gotten better. By doing so they have forced other developers to keep up and maintain a standard in the industry. From the first look at the trailer, it seems like the upcoming Grand Theft Auto title could already be in a league above its competitors.

Netizens have already praised the way Rockstar Games has animated the characters, calling them more realistic than ever. Furthermore, people are also praising the graphic details and illumination in the trailer. Game critics have started to suspect Rockstar is bringing in next-gen development technologies like ray-traced global illumination and parallax mapping in GTA 6. So if the devs are pushing the boundaries further with these technologies, it is bound to take some time to implement.

Another point to note is massively open-world titles like GTA take some time to develop and test. They offer players a variety of options in the game. Each module has to be tested out separately and as a whole system together. This was the case for past GTA titles too.

GTA 4’s first trailer dropped in March 2007 and was released in April 2008. Furthermore, GTA 5’s first trailer dropped in November 2011 and was released in September 2013, a whopping 22 months difference. But fans might counter that the devs already had a decade to develop and test out new technologies. So rather than rushing, they should be left to cook.

GTA Online can be a reason why it took so long to develop the next GTA title

Announcing the trailer and taking another year to release the game will create a 12-year gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6. But a major reason for this delay is a cash cow Rockstar Games found. That was none other than GTA Online. Since the release of GTAO, Rockstar Games has been generating steady revenue. Reportedly, Grand Theft Auto franchise revenues have broken the $8 billion mark since GTA V’s release. And it is likely that GTA 6 will also get a multiplayer version down the road.

However, GTA 6 in online mode may be a long shot for now. They are gaining steady income from GTAO and the release of GTA 6 will boost revenue. But a big reason why GTA 6 is getting delayed is leaks.

Many hackers have attacked Rockstar Games time and again to release confidential information about the development. This throws a major wrench in the development process as resources are then diverted to increasing security. Also, games like GTA are something that cannot be rushed. Gamers have got their fair share of games that were rushed and did not live up to the hype. You do not want a repeat of Fallout 76 or Cyberpunk 2077 on the console when it launched.

Rockstar has always had delays to their original plans. Maybe this time they’ve given themselves plenty of time to make sure 2025 is the release year. In that case, Rockstar knows best when the game is ready. And if it’s 2025 – we should be thankful and excited regardless. Furthermore, it actually won’t be 2 years of waiting.

GTA 6’s 2025 date can arrive faster than fans think

Take-Two’s CEO has given multiple hints that they are preparing for a big release in the first quarter of 2025. He said, “We haven’t spoken about the specific release schedule but we have titles coming from all of our labels.” The game could come out in Jan-Mar of 2025, as the earnings calls suggest, which means it’s about 15-16 months away. If that is true, the next year will be filled to the brim with all kinds of promotions, new trailers, gameplay, teases, interviews, FAQs, press releases, and more. There’ll be so much new information on the game that fans won’t even notice the time passing.

Rockstar Games presumably put 2025 as the date as it puts less pressure on devs and less disappointment from fans in case they internally delay from early 2025 till holiday 2025. It will be great if Rockstar Games finishes the full game by early 2025. Many fans will vividly remember the painful wait for Red Dead Redemption 2 among the delays.

But this 2025 release date affects another sector of the gaming community too – the PC gamers. While Rockstar Games has confirmed a 2025 release, it is specifically for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This means PC gamers will have to wait for a little while more to enjoy playing GTA 6. But just from the first trailer alone, it looks like the game will be worth waiting for.
