The USGA and R&A’s proposed ruling created havoc while the golf world still settled with the PGA Tour designated events. Everyone was discussing the golf ball back rule, and amidst that, Johnson Wagner presented his views on the new changes by the American Tour. In the past year, he has taken a break from playing between the lines and experimented with jobs as a golf course commentator and reporter. But now his words have started a new debate.
Johnson Wagner sounded off on the PGA Tour’s decision
Even though he has skipped certain starts to favor his new media responsibilities, the 42-year-old pro is participating in this season’s tournaments on an exemption for past champions and veteran players. However, it’s crucial for an analyst to express their opinions, and Wagner most definitely does so regarding the PGA Tour’s newly announced modifications to its designated events. According to Golf.com, he said, “I’m furious about it.”

He discussed the fun special events the Tour already held in 2023 as well as how excellent the entire West Coast Swing was in general. Wagner added, “Next year, we aren’t going to have that story. And Nick Taylor is a baller. He’s a two-time winner; I love me some Nick Taylor.”
Despite having faith in the Tour, Wagner expressed his disappointment and said, “I think what makes the PGA Tour so great is having those guys in those events, and I’m shocked and disappointed. I’m a company man and I love the PGA Tour, but I cannot believe they made this decision.”

However, the changes were not a complete shock. Rory McIlroy already hinted about the upcoming changes. And not just that, the no-cut, designated event proposal received a huge thumbs up from former professional golfer, Paige Spiranac. She said, “change has to happen.”

The PGA Tour compared the rival Tours, highlighting the irony
Some people applauded the new designated events format, while others opposed it. Members of LIV Golf, who already compete in no-cut, small-field tournaments and are vying for Official World Golf Rankings points, saw the irony in the Tour’s statement. “I think LIV was dead in the water, and it’s like they went down and resuscitated it with this decision.” He added, “Completely boneheaded to me. I just think you are getting to the point where you have two tours.”
A 120-player field would be smaller, less exclusive, and still provide more possibilities for players in the rear half of the FedEx Cup rankings, according to Wagner.
