Rory McIlroy misses out on a big payday

Just last week, the Irishman headed over to Augusta in hopes of taking home his first Green Jacket and a career grand slam. But things didn’t go as planned! After carding a 72 in the first round and a 77 in the second, McIlroy’s all-four-majors dream were halted in their tracks as he missed the cut at the Masters.

Just a few days later, the golf pro announced his withdrawal from this week’s RBC Heritage, whose winner will receive $3.6 million. With that drop, the 4-time major winner will suffer a PIP penalty, considering it is his second elevated event skip, and Tour pros are only allowed one this season. Among all this turmoil, the fans have been bewildered too, wondering about his next course appearance.

The Tour has back-to-back events for the next few weeks. It heads to LA for the Zurich Classic next week and to Mexico for the Mexico Open the week after that. Considering that neither of these events was something the Irishman took part in last season, it isn’t likely that he will do so this year either. That being said, perhaps if he’s looking for a break from his break, he may just step on the course this month. The only certainty is that till he announces his withdrawal again, he can’t be counted out!

When next will McIlroy take the course?

Regardless of whether the 23-time PGA Tour winner competes in either of the two events, it is likely that he will be on the field for the one that follows in the first week of May—the Wells Fargo Championship. Last year too, the PGA Tour star competed and placed fifth. Moreover, the event is elevated this year and McIlroy, having now skipped two, will unlikely add another to that.

Although his chances of playing early in May are quite high, it is almost certain that there is one fast-approaching event that he will not skip –  The PGA Championship. Having secured a top-10 finish at the second major last year, McIlroy will definitely be looking to grab a win there and increase his major victory count.
