Despite 128 contestants participating in the annual Open Drive competition, Bryson DeChambeau breezed past all to head to the top 32 in the round-robin competition. As the event proceeded, DeChambeau cruised through further rounds.

In the quarter-finals, he scored a top drive of 415 yards. He then blasted a drive of 407 yards in the semi-finals to meet the German Martin Borgmeier in the final. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get past the Borgmeier, but he did receive some words of respect from him.

Following the final, both men hugged and then Borgmeier held on to his PLDA title belt, which is given to the winner of the tournament. As the German was speaking on the mic in excitement about his win, he pointed his fingers toward DeChambeau to give him credit for his contribution to the development of the sport.

Martin Borgmeier said, “I would not be here, none of us would be here with the improvements in technology, if one guy wouldn’t have come in a year ago to make the sport what it is right now. And I think he’s on a very good track to come back. And that guy is Bryson DeChambeau”.

The German winner further added, “He also came in second! What is going on! That guy is a professional golfer and he’s putting up these ball speed numbers … he lights it up in the final, hitting 400 plus! No one has ever done that before! People don’t realize how crazy that is!”

DeChambeau, who was in the audience, didn’t speak publicly after the event concluded, as he smiled during the whole moment. The 2020 US Open winner had finished in the 7th position in last year’s PLDA World Championships. And this year was on the verge of winning it.

With his much more relaxed golf schedule, thanks to his move to LIV Golf, DeChambeau may have a lot more time to practice for next year’s Open Drive Championship. Nonetheless, he already won the hearts of golf fans with his impressive performance this year at Mesquite.
