The article by NewsBreak, titled “Before LIV Golf, Phil Mickelson Reminds That There Was a Proposal Similar to the New-Look PGA Tour,” is where it all started. According to it, Mickelson revealed that the changes made by Monahan are not new. He said, “Before I left I brought a $1 billion commitment from a current PGA Tour partner to have 8 elevated events and give equity and ownership in these events to the players.” He added, “JM’s quote was ‘I don’t believe the league is going to happen we won’t be doing that.’ No vote, no discussion.”

Flesch denied claims of the major championship winner and said, “I believe this was received about as well by the majority of the membership back then too.” The LIV Golf pro was not going to sit idle and let it slide. He stated facts and said, “It wasn’t received by the membership, Steve. That’s the point. It was shot down by Ed and Jay without even a discussion.” The disappointment was visible in his words when he added, “The players were never even aware of it even after numerous meetings with Jay and the details of the sponsor and management was already ironed out.”

Mickelson explained how the system failed all the golfers of the PGA Tour. Not making the players aware was a dangerous move. And now they are trying to get everyone on board with it. He pointed out that a $1 billion opportunity with equity goes to the players. They are the real remembers of the Tour, and it is all because of them. But still, they chose to hide it. He also re-affirmed to Flesch that if he doesn’t believe his words, he can gladly go and ask Monahan about it. The pro would be very interested in hearing his public comments. He also mentioned that post his comments; he would unveil the witnesses gladly.

Did the LIV Golf League pro prove Steve Flesch wrong?
After Mickelson explained what exactly happened, the PGA Tour Champions also chimed in and explained his points. He said, “My point being that the majority of the membership now, isn’t a fan of the changes. Of course the top players love this, but that wasn’t Deane Beman’s mission back then and, at the time, it wasn’t what the Tour wishes to do.” Changes happen with time. Sometimes the changes you desire right now take place only when required.

Mickelson, however, pressured on his point and explained why the Tour did wrong in 2021. “Any opportunities are supposed to be discussed and then voted on per the bylaws.” He added, “Not disregarded because the Tour doesn’t own and control it all. It’s supposed to be decided by the supposed owners of the Tour( the players)” We can only imagine the scenery of the golf world if the changes were adapted then or even considered.
