Phil Mickelson makes a unique offer to PGA Tour pro

At one point during the Memorial Tournament, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama was one of the top contenders for the highly-coveted title. But, two rounds of 75 and 76 saw the golfer eventually finish seven strokes off the lead at T16.

After the tournament at Muirfield ended, a photo of the 2021 Masters winner surfaced on Twitter, surprising many. In it, Matsuyama can be seen standing in a queue to return home standby with Spirit Airlines. A fan page of the Saudi-backed LIV league, called @LivGolfEnth, shared the picture, writing, “Hideki Matsuyama was swayed by the PGA Tour to turn down 9 figures from LIV Golf, Captaincy of his own team & a yearly tournament in Japan. Now he’s flying standby at Spirit Airlines.

The tweet caught the attention of Phil Mickelson, who replied, “This isn’t how the HYFLYERS FLY. Hideki should come fly with us.” The Mickelson-led HyFlyers GC is one of the twelve teams in the LIV league.

Fans react to Phil Mickelson’s latest tweet

Per usual, Mickelson’s fiery tweet involving Hideki Matsuyama has also gotten varied reactions from fans. Many fans have called the Saudi-backed league, with one even vilifying the nature and quality of tournaments on it.

Several fans have also heaped praise on Matsuyama for his humble nature. Last year, the golfer had shut down the rumors about a potential LIV move by pledging his loyalty to the PGA Tour. During the 2022 Zozo Championship, the World No. 25 had said, “Yeah, I’m fully committed to the PGA Tour, I’m a member.

A handful of fans, on the other hand, have agreed with the golfer. One golf enthusiast even said the major winner deserved better than the PGA Tour.
