The sports industry has always been very pressured. With so much money and investment at stake, every player once in their lifetime feels the utmost burden of it. Every day, players are expected to be at the top of their game and to avoid making any minor errors. This obviously takes a toll on their mental health.
Many well-known athletes stress the significance of mental wellness. The best example is Simone Biles, who withdrew from five of the seven Olympic events in Tokyo to give herself some time. Similar to gymnast, Lexi Thompson has taken on the responsibility to highlight the importance of mental health in the golf world. She emphasizes the value of caring for oneself in such a demanding environment. And with that in mind, the golf pro has now taken a major decision!

Lexi Thompson draws the line in golf at training
The 28-year-old golfer is no stranger to the pressure of being the best at games. In 2021, just before the Tokyo Games, she talked about the importance of mental health and how much athletes have to go through both mentally and physically. Years before that, too, she had the same focus. In fact, she withdrew from the 2018 Women’s British Open three weeks earlier because of mental exhaustion.
This time around, a similar issue troubles Thompson, and hence she’s stepped away from the sport once more! After a rough time at the Aramco Series, she took to Instagram to announce that she was taking some time off. Sharing her picture in the gym, she wrote: “I will be taking the next few weeks off. Even though I’ll be training and practicing, I have a few things I need to do that are important to me and need to take time for myself. So I’ll see ya soon.”

Thompson’s performance at this year’s Aramco Series at Donald Trump’s Golf Course was highly anticipated since she won the same title last year as well. But Spain’s Carlota Ciganda took the trophy, and Thompson finished in T21. Though her performance was not satisfactory, Thompson is talented and knows how to take care of herself. And by prioritizing her own needs above golf, she’s not setting a brilliant example for her fans by letting them know that self-love is a necessity.
Fans react to Thompson’s saddening news
Writing down something important and not being judged for it shows that one is surrounded by compassionate individuals. And the same holds true for Thompson. The 2014 Chevron Championship victor has a devoted fan base that extended their well wishes during her time of difficulty.

Here are some of the things they had to say:
One wrote: “Do what is important to you and your well-being. Enjoy your time off.”
Another one commented: “Always super important to make time for yourself, whether it’s a reset or just to do stuff you want to do without other distractions ❤️.”
One user reacted: “Enjoy your break. Everyone needs those from time to time.” While other wrote: “Good for you, self care is very important!!!”
Many fans are also anticipating her coming back full force.
One wrote, “We look forward to hearing from you when you feel you are ready.”
Another said, “Will miss watching you compete. Hope all is well and you get everything taken care of whatever it is. Can’t wait for you to return. All the best to you Lexi.”

Thompson’s words from 2021 during the Olympics undoubtedly rang through the ears of all these fans. “I think [mental health] is just as important, if not more,” she had said. Evidently, her fans have now backed her up on that, however saddening it may be for them since they won’t be able to watch their favorite star on the course for a while!
