Serial streaker explained what happened during Daly’s infamous victory

It was a wonderful day for John Daly since he had just won the British Open at St. Andrew’s in 1995. However, there was someone else who decided to steal his thunder before fans could celebrate the golfer’s victory.

And it was none other than serial streaker Mark Roberts from Liverpool, who made his appearance right after Daly putt the ball on 18. Fans were shocked to see a naked man running towards the golf legend as Daly’s wife hugged him.

While everyone was giving perceptions about the incident, the man who caused the fiasco opened up about the incident in an interview. He explained how he put his plan into action. “As John Daly approached the 18th green, I got ready and put on a cloth cap,” Roberts said. “Gary, one of my mates, had earlier etched onto my back, with a compass and marker pen, ”19th HOLE” and drew an arrow pointing to my bum.”Read More: When John Daly ‘Freaked Out’ a 13-Year-Old Tiger Woods With His Brute Power

The pictures of the whole naked run went viral on the internet. Moreover, people still remember the tournament more due to the incident than Daly’s victory. He said, “I jumped over the barrier and proceeded to run towards him.” 

Roberts also explained how he was disappointed by Daly hugging his wife since he wanted to be the first to meet him and “shake his putting glove.” However, he soon realized that running towards the golfer could result in him getting bashed by Daly like a ball, thanks to his reputation. So he decided to run past him and said “I wanted him swinging at neither!”

John Daly reacted to the incident

Daly clearly saw what happened right after he claimed the title as Mark Roberts came running toward him. He noticed how Roberts had an arrow pointing towards his bottom saying it was the “19th hole.” Well, other than simply finding it hilarious, here’s what Daly said. “Well you know, I heard he was a cop… It’s a little embarrassing. I mean, you know, I sign a lot of stuff, but that’s one picture I won’t sign… I’m not signing a guy’s a** I’m sorry.”

Mark Roberts has surely made it to the books of golf’s history by stealing John Daly’s thunder. Lucky for him he didn’t have to face the golfer’s wrath after the event. But people still find the incident very funny!
