With just hours until Full Swing’s official release, Netflix has every golf fan impatiently waiting. And their recent surprise for the US audience has only increased the excitement. Of course, what they were looking for was when they allowed the first episode, ‘Frenemies,’ to be viewed in the United States ahead of its release on Wednesday this week. The episode has given the fans a lot of insight into Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth’s bond. And if that weren’t enough, it also dives deeper into JT’s complicated father-son relationship with Mike Thomas.

Mike Thomas draws a line when coaching Justin Thomas
Netflix’s early release of Full Swing’s first episode certainly surprised the golf world. Well, at least the American fans! Featuring intense drama-filled moments from the famous PGA Tour golf pals, JT and Spieth, and Thomas’ second major win, it was certainly nothing short of epic. But the man who stole the show wasn’t either of the two, it was Mike Thomas.

The 15-time PGA Tour winner’s father and coach had the most heartfelt moments of the entire episode. Mike’s memory of his father being tough on him and how much that stung and affected him was undoubtedly heartbreaking. And then there was his resolve to never be that way with his children, no matter what the stakes were.

To him, being a good father always came first. He knew firsthand how harshness and toughness affected one’s psychology, and he had sworn never to subject his children to that. That’s what gave rise to him being a great but gentle coach with Justin, which is something JT sometimes hated.

JT sometimes wants more from his coach
Although the two-time major winner never once questioned his father’s coaching abilities, sometimes it infuriated him that he would never be hard on him. “I get pissed at him sometimes…he’s not going to go full Butch Harmon or Pete Cowan and tell me I suck,” he claimed. “And sometimes I would love for him to say that just because I want to hear it.”

But Thomas Sr. has his own way of doing things, and JT can never deny that it certainly works. He’s the cool-headed negotiator who can talk his sometimes-hot-headed son down from the ledge. And he proved it at the PGA Championship when he spoke his son back up from rock bottom and gave him a fighting chance.
